St Helens beat Wigan in Cardiff
06/05/2007
St Helens beat Wigan 34-18 in the final match of Saturday's 'Millennium Magic' in Cardiff to regain top spot in the Super League table.
Paul Wellens was the hero for Saints, scoring four tries out of six St Helens scores, while Wigan could only manage to reply with three of their own.
Francis Meli got the first try of the game but Bryan Fletcher grabbed one for Wigan to bring the scores level. After that Saints ran away with the game.
Wellens scored his first while Matt Gidley also touched down to give Saints a ten-point lead. Wellens then added another to give his side a 22-6 half-time advantage.
The full-back crossed twice more in the second half, either side of Chris Ashton's try for Wigan, as the Saints continued to dominate the game.
Darrell Goulding scored a try for Wigan but when Trent Barrett dropped the ball on the goal-line their chances of a comeback were extinguished.
Earlier in the day Hull KR beat local rivals Hull FC 14-10 thanks to the efforts of former Hull FC player Paul Cooke.
It was the 200th time the two sides had met and it was a predictably bruising encounter as each side cancelled each other out.
Rovers began the game on top thanks to Cooke whose chip set Makali Aizue free to score the game's first try. Cooke then added a penalty before releasing Ben Cockayne for their second.
Hull responded with a try either side of half time to close the gap but they could not find a score in the closing minutes that would have levelled the match.
In the day's other game, Harlequins defeated the Catalan Dragons 32-18.
