St Helens continue charge in Super League

14/07/2006

Super League leaders St Helens continued their devastating form with a 30-24 home win over Harlequins in Brian McDermott's first game in charge for the visitors.

Tries from Matty Smith, Keiron Cunningham, Nick Fozzard, James Graham and Ade Gardner lead the hosts to victory against their injury-ravaged opponents.

After trailing 18-8 at the break, Quins produced a commendable second-half performance to fall just six points short of the Saints.

Australian trio Daniel Heckenburg, Tyrone Smith and Mark McLinden as well as winger Nick Bradley-Qalilawa crossed the line for Harlequins.

Elsewhere, Wigan made it five wins in a row to ease their relegation fears after a 20-12 victory over Salford.

Brian Noble kept an unchanged team for the clash with the Reds and it proved successful after tries from Bryan Fletcher, Brett Dallas and in-form Danny Orr gave the Warriors victory.

The Reds, who are awaiting to receive the go-ahead on a new 20,000 seater stadium, crossed the line twice through substitute Ryan Clayton and Aaron Moule.

Elsewhere, Bradford remain in fourth place after a 30-16 win over the struggling Catalan Dragons.

Two tries each from full back Marcus St Helaire and Kiwi Lesley Vanikolo guided the hosts to a comfortable victory having led 18-10 at half time.

Scrum-half Paul Deacon continued his good form with five goals for the Bulls while Kiwi Alex Chan, centre Bruno Verges and Gregory Mounis went over for the visitors.
