St Helens edge out battling Salford

21/04/2006

St Helens maintained their unbeaten with a 12-10 win over Salford but were made to work hard by a team who have been the Super League's surprise package.

The high-flying Reds were tipped as relegation candidates at the start of the season but are now fourth in the table and made the Saints work hard for the win.

Jason Hooper put St Helens ahead on six minutes with the help of the video ref although David Hodgson replied for the home side with a stunning try on ten minutes.

Ian Hardman collected Sean Long's kick to make the score 10-4 and Jamie Lyon added two points after the break, as the Saints adopted unusually conservative tactics.

Salford gave everything to try and win the game and battered the away defence until Simon Finnigan's late try gave a glimmer of hope.

In the other game of the game, Leeds battered Castleford 42-6 with a scintillating display of running rugby.

The Rhinos are second in the table, four points behind St Helens, while Castleford stayed second-bottom, four points clear of struggling Wigan.

The rout was sealed by tries from Matt Diskin (2), Keith Senior (2), Scott Donald, Danny McGuire, Gareth Ellis, Jamie Peacock and Ashley Gibson.
