St Helens stage dramatic comeback to beat Wakefield

02/03/2008

St Helens staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Wakefield 34-30 in a tense Super League match at Knowsley Road.

The two teams went into the break with the scores tied at 18-18, and tries from Jamie Rooney and Sean Gleeson after the resumption looked to have given the visitors the points.

However, three tries in the last 16 minutes, including one from Paul Wellens and a Ade Gardner brace capped a memorable comeback for the Saints.

At the Halliwell Jones Stadium, two tries from Chris Hicks helped Warrington to a comfortable 38-8 victory against Catalans Dragons.

Michael Monaghan, Vinnie Anderson, Chris Hicks, Jon Clarke and Paul Johnson also went over for the home side, with four goals from Lee Briers adding to their impressive tally.

Clint Greenshields and Sebastien Raguin touched down for the visitors, though their tries proved to be little more than a consolation.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield's resurgent form continued as they cruised to a 28-8 win at home to Hull, with Jamahl Lolesi, Kevin Brown, Luke Robinson, Eorl Crabtree and Shane Elford all getting on the score sheet.

Jon Sharp's team recorded only their first victory of the season at the end of last month, crushing Yorkshire rivals Castleford 64-12.

Harlequins also continued their fine start to the season, with two kicked goals and a try from captain Rob Purdham helping them to a 22-16 win away at Castleford.
