St Helens thump Salford
09/04/2007
St Helens leapfrogged Leeds at the top of Super League with a thumping 48-4 win over Salford at Knowsley Road.
The Saints cruised past the visitors with ease, sharing nine tries around the team, to reinforce their title credentials as defending champions.
Andy Coley scored Salford's solitary try, following a well-judged kick ahead with a burst of pace which saw off the remnants of the home defence and allowed him time to gather and dot down.
Elsewhere Hull came out on top in their battle with city neighbours Hull Kingston Rovers, recording a 22-14 win that was less comfortable than the scoreline suggests.
Late tries from David Tangata-Toa and Andreas Bauer brought Rovers storming back into the game and to within two points of Hull after their side had struggled in the first half.
But Sid Domic's last-minute touchdown and Paul Cooke's composed conversion killed off the comeback and secured local bragging rights.
Bradford kept a second-half comeback from Wakefield at bay and move into second spot with a 36-24 away win.
The Bulls' powerful start saw them establish a 24-6 lead at half-time which, despite Wakefield's spirited attempts, proved too great a deficit to make up after the interval.
Huddersfield similarly held out against a Warrington backlash as they saw a comfortable 22-8 lead at the break reduced to a 26-18 winning scoreline by the close.
