Super League clubs trailing Australia captain Lockyer

08/04/2008

Up to six Super League clubs are keen to secure a deal to sign Australia captain Darren Lockyer, according to the player's manager George Mimis.

The Brisbane Broncos star is out of contract at the end of the 2009 NRL season and has previously spoken of his desire to play in England towards the end of his career.

It is unclear which clubs make up the six interested parties, although Hull Kingston Rovers are thought to be one of the most vocal in their desire to sign the 31-year-old in time for the start of the 2010 season.

"Each year there's interest [in Lockyer]," Mimis told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

"This year, at least five clubs - maybe six - would be interested."

Mimis admitted a couple of years playing in Super League had featured as a "tentative… discussion point" with Lockyer over "what life might look like" after his current deal expires.

"It's a possibility," Mimis continued when asked if England would be Lockyer's likely destination in two years' time.

"He's enjoyed the time he's had, football-wise, over there.

"He's enjoyed travelling there on a couple of occasions socially as well. He doesn't dislike the whole environment."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18541833-ADNFCR
