Tigers shock world champions to record first win of season

07/03/2008

Castleford stunned world champions Leeds 38-20 for their first win of the season in Super League at the Jungle.

The rock-bottom Tigers, who led 14-6 at the break, scored seven tries while Joe Westerman kicked five goals.

Luke Dorn and Michael Shenton grabbed two tries apiece while Westerman, Stuart Donlan and Ryan McGoldrick also crossed the line.

The below-par Rhinos scored four tries with Scott Donald grabbing a hat-trick while Jordon Tansey crashed over late on.

The result sees Castleford remain bottom but join four other sides on two points, while the Rhinos remain top of the table with eight points from five games.

Elsewhere, a last-gasp goal from Matty Smith gave St Helens a 30-29 win over Hull FC at Knowsley Road.

Last year's grand finalists, who led 22-14 at the break, touched down five times through Ade Gardner, Smith, Willie Talau, Kyle Eastmond, and James Roby. Smith kicked his fifth goal in the closing minutes to clinch victory for the Saints.

Injury-ravaged Hull scored five tries through Adam Dykes, Danny Houghton, Craig Hall, Danny Washbrook, and Kirk Yeaman, while Danny Tickle booted over four goals.

The win for the Saints moves them into second spot level with the Rhinos, while Hull remain in tenth place.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18501037-ADNFCR
