Timmins makes Castleford home

18/07/2006

Former Australian rugby league international Shaun Timmins has signed for Super League side Castleford Tigers on a two-year deal.

The versatile Test veteran will begin his career in England at the start of next season.

The 29-year-old, who can play both loose-forward and centre, makes the switch from St George Illawarra after over 200 appearances in the Australian National Rugby League.

He leaves his homeland as a legend - only last month he was voted into an all-time greatest Illawarra team - and Cas coach Terry Matterson spoke of his excitement at teaming up with the nine-time Kangaroo.

"To sign someone of Shaun’s stature is a huge boost for us. He has played at the highest level for over ten years and has tremendous big match experience in tests and origin," he said.

Timmins was equally enthused by the prospect of his gracing the Jungle.

"I'm keen as mustard to be coming over to the UK, it is something that I have wanted to do for a while and I am really excited about the move," he said.

He may not be the only southern hemisphere star to be heading to the Tigers. Matterson is also close to sealing the signing of New Zealand second row Awen Guttenbeil.
