Wakefield try-fest keeps Saints top

02/07/2006

St Helens maintained their lead at the top of Super League after a high-scoring 52-36 win at Wakefield.

The Saints rammed in nine tries with two from Paul Wellens followed by scores from seven other players.

Vinnie Anderson, Paul Long, Lyon Price, Jason Hooper, Maurie Fa'asavalu and Jon Wilkin all added tries to leave the club on course for their fifth championship since 1996.

The Wildcats' were led by two-tries each from scrum half Sam Obst and Ben Jeffries and five goals from hooker David March.

Leeds notched up their seventh straight win with a 36-14 truimph over rivals Huddersfield.

Winger Scott Donald opened the scoring for the Rhinos but the hosts led at the break thanks to a penalty and converted try from full-back Michael De Vere.

Leeds then romped to victory with tries from centre Chev Walker and two-quick tries from winger Danny Williams and second-row Jamie Jones-Buchanan to keep the Rhinos in second spot, two points behind St. Helens.

Castleford got a much-needed victory over struggling Warrington 52-26 to remain above the relegation zone.

The Tigers, lying 9th at the start of the day, got off to a flying start with tries from winger Waine Pryce, Tongan Willie Manu and half-back Danny Brough in the opening 12 minutes.

The Wolves responded with tries from Rob Parker, Brent Grose and Stuart Reardon but the Tigers led at half-time 28-14 thanks to Richard Fa'aoso and Peter Lupton.

The hosts rammed in three more tries in a bad-tempered second half with centre Ryan McGoldrick and England international Paul Wood both sent-off for fighting along with three players sin-binned.
