Warriors ease relegation fears with win over Rhinos

11/08/2006

Wigan ended a miserable week off the field with a vital 20-18 away win at Leeds in Super League at the Headingley Carnegie stadium.

The Warriors, who were fined and deducted two points for breaching salary cap rules, eased their relegation fears with the victory that puts them two points ahead of relegation rivals Catalan and Wakefield.

Australian David Vaealiki, full back Chris Ashton and right wing Mark Calderwood grabbed the tries for the hosts while Mark Dobson kicked four goals.

Leeds, who miss the chance to overtake Hull in second place, had tries from second rows Ali Lauitiiti and Ian Kirke and two from full back Ashley Gibson along with a goal from forward Kevin Sinfield.

Salford cemented their place in fifth in the race for the playoffs after a nail biting 35-34 win over sixth placed Warrington.

Two tries from prop Andy Coley and five goals from winger David Hodgson led the Reds to victory.

Second row Simon Finnegan, prop Gareth Haggerty and scrum half Luke Robinson were also on the scoresheet for the hosts.

The Wolves, who led 14-12 at halftime, were helped by five goals from playmaker Lee Briers and two tries from Australian Brent Grose.

Hooker Michael Sullivan and playmaker Chris Bridge crossed the line late on to reduce the Reds lead from 35-28 to a single point but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

The Wolves next face Harlequins next Saturday followed by their last three games against the top three sides in the division.
