Warriors pummelled by Rhinos
10/06/2006
Wigan Warriors remain in deep trouble at the bottom of the Super League table after a 48-22 defeat at the hands of Leeds Rhinos.
The home side scored eight tries, including a brace from Scott Donald, to move within four points of St Helens.
However, it ended in another defeat for the Warriors, their 14th in 16 games, but coach Brian Noble insists that he is still upbeat about Wigan's survival chances.
"We gave far too many penalties away at crucial times and that's something we need to look at," Noble said.
"We've got to build performances and we need to start winning games but I am still confident we can turn the corner."
Wigan made a positive start as they raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to tries from Danny Orr and Chris Ashton.
However, they were blown away in 13 first-half minutes as Leeds ran in four tries.
Donald was the first to go over after good work from scrum-half Rob Burrow, who also got on the scoresheet in between tries from Danny Williams and Keith Senior.
More was to follow in the second half as Ali Lauitiiti added to the try count for Leeds, before Chev Walker grab himself a score.
Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Donald's second completed the scoring for Leeds and while the visitors went over twice late on through Pat Richards and 18-year-old Darrell Goulding, they remain six points adrift.
