Wigan run riot over Catalans

16/06/2007

Wigan comfortably beat the Catalan Dragons 30-0 at the JJB Stadium to take fourth place in the Super League thanks to a fine display from Australian Trent Barrett.

The stand-off was highly influential and also grabbed a try himself as the home side brushed aside their opponents.

The match was a well-contested affair until the French side had Adam Mogg sin-binned after 22 minutes.

Wigan were able to make their numerical advantage pay, running in two tries while Mogg was off the field.

First Phil Bailey scored in the corner, evading two tacklers after good work from Bailey and Sean O'Loughlin.

Barrett then made it 14-0 after breaking clear from inside his own half. The Australian jinked his way through the Catalan defence to claim his 12th try of the season.

In the second half Pat Richards added a penalty to the scoreline before Chris Ashton added another long-range score, going the length of the field in a superb solo effort.

There was still time for Richards and Mark Calderwood to also cross the whitewash as the Warriors completed the rout.

The win will be a huge confidence boost for the Warriors ahead of their Challenge Cup semi-final against the Catalans next month.

Elsewhere Salford beat Harlequins 5-2 in the first ever try-less game in Super League history.

John Wilshere kicked two goals while Luke Robinson added a drop goal to help the Reds move closer to safety, though they remain at the foot of the table.
