Wildcats extend Kear contract
31/08/2006
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have staved off interest among rival clubs for their head coach John Kear after he agreed terms on a new contract keeping him at the club until the end of the 2007 season.
Kear has impressed since taking over the reins on a short-term basis last month and the club's chiefs have decided to extend his deal beyond the end of this current season.
Wildcats chief executive Steve Ferres explained: "John has put some good structures in place since he was appointed head coach.
"The short-term appointment gave everyone at the club a chance to find out more about John's coaching philosophy and John has had a chance to have a good look at the club.
"I am pleased to announce that in both cases the response has been extremely positive as the level of performance on the pitch has shown."
Kear's first game in charge saw Wakefield beat local rivals Castleford Tigers 0-18 and he followed this up with a crucial 34-14 victory over Les Catalans.
The club's Super League future is still in the balance but Kear insists he is fully committed to leading the club next season.
"I am thrilled to be extending my time at the Wildcats, I have really enjoyed the last month or so working with the players," he said.
"Everyone at the club has made me very welcome and the supporters have been marvellous; these are all factors that I took into account prior to our talks."
He added: "I consider myself a Super League coach and will give all my best endeavours to ensure that I am still a Super League coach next year but if we have to take a step back to take two steps forward, so be it… however the infrastructure is right for progress at this club."
