Wildcats move into playoffs
01/07/2007
Wakefield have climbed into the Super League playoff places after a 32-6 win over Wigan at Belle Vue.
The home team rammed in six tries through Richard Moore, Peter Fox, Jason Demetriou, Matt Blaymire, and a brace from Ben Jeffries.
Brett Ferres continued his devastating form with four goals for the Wildcats.
The below-par Warriors had led 7-0 with a try from Trent Barrett and a goal from Pat Richards on seven minutes.
The result sees the Wildcats move into sixth spot while the Warriors remain in fourth place.
After the Warriors made a flying start, Wakefield hit back with four tries to lead 22-6 at the break.
Centre Demetriou touched down on ten minutes and soon after Jeffries crossed the line under the posts after Bryan Fletcher's knock-on.
Demetriou continued to impress and his bamboozling run set-up Blaymire for his side's third try.
In the closing minutes of the half, Seam Gleeson produced a defence-splitting pass for Fox to touch down.
Barrett was sin-binned on 70 minutes for a high tackle on Adam Watene destroyed the Warriors' hopes of mounting a comeback.
Ryan Atkins set-up Jeffries for his second try while prop Moore burst through from the halfway line to complete the rout.
Wildcats coach John Kear praised Demetriou's performances in the latter stages of the season.
"He's a leader - when you're faced with adversity, you need to stand up and Jason certainly did," Kear said.
"There were some big efforts out there because Wigan are a very good team.
"I've been telling the players all week that Trent Barrett is the best player in Super League - and a few of them wanted to prove me wrong."
