Withers eyes Wigan comeback
25/06/2007
Wigan Warriors full-back Michael Withers says he is almost ready to return to action in the Super League after nearly two months out injured.
The Australian suffered a twisted knee while playing for Warriors in their 20-18 victory over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Carnegie on April 10th and underwent keyhole surgery to correct the problem.
But after intensive physiotherapy over the last ten weeks, which has seen him miss eight Super League fixtures, Withers says he is almost ready to make his comeback against Wakefield Wildcats this weekend.
"If all goes well in training this week, I'll be ready to play again on Sunday," he said.
The 31-year-old joined Warriors from Bradford Bulls last winter and was expected to be a key part of Wigan's title challenge this season.
However without him Wigan have struggled – losing four of the eight games Withers has missed, including key defeats to possible play-off opponents Harlequins and Huddersfield and table-topping rivals St Helens.
In their quest for a play-off berth, Wigan are currently fourth in the table but they are just three points ahead of Sunday's opponents Wakefield, who occupy seventh place and the first position outside the top-six play-off spots.
