Wretched Wigan lose again

17/04/2006

Manager-less Wigan's season has suffered yet another setback following a 30-18 defeat by Harlequins.

The former Super League greats are staring down the barrel, four points adrift with a paltry two points from their opening ten matches this season.

Once again the contest was over by the interval and the Warriors were jeered by fans at the JJB as they stood already 26-8 down to the London side.

Harlequins ran in six tries as they galloped away with the contest Luke Dorn crossed twice and Matt Gafa, Rikki Sheriffe, David Mills and Tyrone Smith all following him over the line.

However, Wigan's caretaker coach Stuart Wilkinson has said he is determined to inspire a turnaround.

"I'm absolutely confident that the players can turn it around," he said after the loss.

"There's a tremendous amount of potential in the team but there is a lot of work to be done."

Elsewhere, at Castleford, Warrington smashed their away-from-home scoring record by touching down 11 times against a poor side.

The Tigers missed an extraordinary 65 tackles as Lee Briers ran riot scoring ten goals and joining so many of his team mates on a lengthy list of try scorers.

St Helens travelled to France to take on Catalans Dragons, the French new boys took an early lead but Saints came back to take the points with a 34-20 win.

And Leeds won 24-18 on the road at the Salford Reds, while Hull were largely untroubled by the Wakefield Wildcats to take a 36-24 victory.
