All Blacks looking for new coach
15/11/2007
New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) have opened up the application process for the position of the All Blacks head coach following a performance review.
Current coach Graham Henry will be welcome to submit an application of his own if he wishes to retain the position at the end of his four-year tenure at the end of November.
He commented: "We have had a thorough review of our record over the last four years.
"As a group of coaches, we are very proud of the team's achievements in that time, but of course are very disappointed in the World Cup result.
"We all want what is best for New Zealand rugby and understand the board's decision to ask for applications. All three of us will take time to think about the next steps and we'll have a decision on the 26th."
The Kiwis were once again the overwhelming favourites for the Rugby World Cup in France this autumn but were knocked out by the hosts in a dramatic quarter-final in Cardiff.
It marked the fifth time in succession that the All Blacks have entered the tournament among the favourites but have failed to live up to expectations.
The only World Cup win for the side came at the inaugural and invitational tournament in 1987, when the rugby union nations competing were still under amateur status.
NZRU rugby committee chairman Mike Eagle said the performance at the most recent World Cup had prompted the rethink about the coaching setup, despite an excellent record over the previous three years.
"There is no doubt that all involved in New Zealand rugby are disappointed with the outcome of Rugby World Cup 2007," Eagle remarked.
"That said, we also want to recognise and acknowledge the significant achievements of this coaching panel and the team on and off the field over the last four years."
The board expects to have all applications submitted by the end of November in preparation for making a final decision on the coaching position by Christmas.
