Ashton backs Strettle to shine
24/02/2007
England coach Brian Ashton says that winger David Strettle has all the assets needed to succeed in international rugby as he earns his first cap against Ireland in the Six Nations.
The Harlequins man has been called up in place of the injured Jason Robinson but Ashton says that age and experience should be no barrier to the 23-year-old.
He said: "David Strettle is a lad on form, who is scoring tries. He has got pace, good feet and is a tremendous finisher.
"Speaking to people like Jim Mallinder [England Saxons coach], he says David is someone who remains unflustered on big occasions, and that will certainly help him here."
Strettle has scored eight tries in 11 appearances for his club so far this season and has impressed at every opportunity.
The player said that he would be unfazed before the game started: "Obviously, I will be nervous - I don't know many players who don't get nervous before games - but it is a case of trying to keep those nerves under control."
By contrast Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan is pleased to have one of his most experienced players back in the fold for the crucial showdown this afternoon.
Scrum-half Peter Stringer missed the defeat to France last time out and O'Sullivan believes he gives the team great stability.
He said: "Peter is probably the best passer of the ball in the world at number nine. He gives the receiver so much time."
England are yet to decide on the fitness of Jonny Wilkinson, but Ashton has said that his Newcastle team mate, Toby Flood, will be the man to replace him if needed - not London Irish utility back Mike Catt.
