Ashton could select Dallaglio
23/12/2007
England coach Brian Ashton says he has not ruled out selecting Wasps forward Lawrence Dallaglio for the Six Nations.
Dallaglio had thought his England career could be over following negative comments about Ashton's management during the World Cup and his advancing years.
Although Ashton was confirmed as England coach for the foreseeable future earlier this week the 61-year-old has offered an olive branch to the former captain.
He told the Sunday Mirror: "I've never have been and never will be a vindictive man.
"If I think a player is the best in that position, or the best servant for England in that position, then he will get selected - it is that simple."
Ashton says although criticism he received from players, including Dallaglio, after the World Cup was unfortunate he would not let it dictate his selection policy.
He said: "I didn't like the criticism but, to be honest, it just washed over me. It didn't affect me at all.
"So my message to everyone is that the door is open unless you have retired from international rugby."
Ashton explained that he did not want to start a new era with an entirely new set of players and that some veterans would be needed to help integrate newer members of the squad.
"You have always got to have the balance in a side between the exuberance of youth and some experience," said Ashton.
His comments suggest that there could be a place for Dallaglio in the Six Nations squad even if it is a role on the bench.
