Borthwick to join Saracens

16/01/2008

England lock Steve Borthwick has agreed to join Saracens from Bath for the start of next season on a four-year deal.

The move will end Borthwick's ten-year stint at Bath, who he has played for since the start of his career, and will leave the West Country club searching for a new captain.

Although Borthwick is a veteran of Premiership rugby, and has earned 32 caps for England, he is still only 28 years old and Saracens director of rugby Alan Gaffney feels Borthwick still has much to offer.

He said: "Steve is an excellent lineout forward who is in the prime of his career and we are delighted that he is joining the club."

Borthwick will form a formidable second-row partnership with former New Zealand international Chris Jack who joined the club after the recent World Cup.

Gaffney claims the move signals Saracens intent to propel themselves to the top of English and European rugby.

"His ability in the set-piece and all round the pitch means he will fit in well with the expansive and attacking style of rugby we are developing at the club and want to play in the years to come," added Gaffney.

Borthwick wished Bath and their supporters a bright future but felt it was the right time for him to move on in his career.

He said: "After ten years here, I feel that the time is right for a new challenge. A change in club provides that and I am excited about what the future holds."

Borthwick will be coached by former Australia coach Eddie Jones next year who will take over from Gaffney at the end of the season.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18429921-ADNFCR
