Brennan banned for fan fight
26/02/2007
Toulouse lock-forward Trevor Brennan has been banned by the French rugby authorities until March 15th after he was allegedly involved in an assault on an Ulster fan last month.
Brennan claims he was being taunted by the Irish supporters and that derogatory comments about his mother caused him to confront fans as he was warming up along the touchline.
However, the supporter involved, Patrick Bamford, has claimed he did not make any remarks of this kind and Brennan is awaiting a full disciplinary hearing.
Today's European Rugby Cup committee convened in Dublin set the full hearing for March 16th and dismissed an application for it to be adjourned.
In the meantime, Brennan will not be allowed to compete for his club side as he awaits the outcome of the hearing after the incident in the Heineken Cup last month.
During the same game, Welsh international Gareth Thomas was also cited after he had to be held back because he claimed he also heard taunts from the crowd. He received a ban that ruled him out of Wales' first three Six Nations matches.
Brennan is set to retire at the end of this season, although any lengthy ban could bring a premature end to his career.
