Cardiff inflict Stade defeat
15/12/2007
Cardiff Blues have climbed to the top of Heineken Cup pool 3 with a memorable 31-21 win over French champions Stade Francais at the Arms Park.
The Blues got off to a strong start, but it could have been even better had Tom James' early score not been ruled out for a forward pass in a cutting move that followed a brave charge-down.
As it was a penalty from Dai Flanagan was followed by a midfield break from captain Gareth Thomas which resulted in Jamie Robinson sauntering in under the posts and a 10-0 lead for the hosts after just ten minutes.
Another successful kick from Flanagan nudged the home side further into the lead, but Stade Francais finally managed to tighten their defence and responded with a try through Julien Arias.
But with the last move of the half the Blues restored their advantage as James' powerful surge burst a gaping hole in the visitors' backline and took him crashing over the line to secure a 20-7 lead for his side.
Second row Paul Tito pounced on his own charge-down to register the first try of the second half, embarrass a casual Skrela and increase the lead to 25-10.
In a hard-fought final third Stade gradually eroded away Cardiff's advantage as a pair of penalties from Skrela and a try from flanker Antoine Burban took them to within seven points.
However a late drop goal from Flanagan moved the Blues back clear of their opponents and banked a famous win.
