Contempomi fires Argentina to Ireland win
27/05/2007
The boot of Felipe Contempomi denied Ireland their first ever win in South America as Argentina won 22-20 in Santa Fe.
In the first Test the Leinster fly-half scored 17 points, including a last-gasp drop goal, cancelling out a dream start by the tourists.
Eddie O'Sullivan's team had led through Brian Carney, with the former rugby league star taking just eight minutes to make his mark on the international stage.
Paddy Wallace converted Carney's try, but Contempomi kept the hosts in the game with his deadly accurate kicking.
A penalty try, duly converted by Wallace, gave the Irish a 17-9 lead, but Hernan Senillosa profited from some lax rearguard play to go over for Argentina's only try of the match.
A late Gavin Duffy penalty looked to have made the game safe for Ireland, but an even later flourish from Contempomi denied O'Sullivan a maiden South American victory.
The two teams will meet next week in the second Test in Buenos Aires.
