Danielli added to Scotland squad

19/06/2007

Former Borders wing Simon Danielli has been added to the Scotland training squad and is in contention for a place in the World Cup squad, according to coach Frank Hadden.

The 27-year-old, who has been capped 13 times by his country, joins up with the rest of the squad despite suffering a groin injury in Scotland A's Churchill Cup clash against Ireland earlier this month.

That problem looked to have ended the winger's chances of pushing for a place at France 2007 but Hadden said he has had a change of heart after monitoring the player's progress.

"Simon has returned from holiday and been assessed by our medical team. His injury was not as bad as first feared and we have decided that he is worthy of consideration for a place in our rugby World Cup squad," he said.

"Competition for places in our back three is already fierce and it intensifies with Simon's inclusion."

Danielli himself said he is "delighted to be back" and intends to "battle hard over the next few weeks to prove my fitness and try to win a place in the final… squad".

A total of 39 players are now included in Scotland's provisional squad, from which a final 30 will be picked to make the trip to the world's premier rugby tournament, which kicks off in September.
