Davies proud of Welsh in defeat
24/11/2007
Wales caretaker coach Nigel Davies feels that incoming coach Warren Gatland can learn a lot from the 34-12 defeat against world champions South Africa.
Although the Welsh were outscored by five tries to two by a silky South African side, Davies believed his team had shown a lot of quality which will encourage Gatland.
"Coming into the game we asked the boys to step up the passion and intensity and I am hugely proud that we have done that," said Davies.
"We had some great performance and I am very proud of the players because they showed what they are capable of.
"This is the first step in a new era of Welsh rugby and we have a lot to look forward to."
Davies felt that the difference between the two sides today was that the South Africans were more clinical with the chances they created.
But with the exciting pairing of James Hook at fly-half and Gavin Henson at inside-centre, Wales showed some much-needed attacking flair.
"They were very clinical and that is what being world champions is all about," said Davies. "The difference was we didn't finish enough of our line breaks off and South Africa did.
"South Africa showed exactly why they are world champions and we can learn from that. We have to continue to play with passion and be more clinical."
