Disgraced Wallaby sets sail for NRL

27/02/2007

Banned Australian rugby union international Wendell Sailor has been in talks with various rugby league clubs in his homeland about a possible return to the code once he serves out his suspension.

The winger tested positive for cocaine in 2006 and was subsequently banned from sport until April 2008.

But the 32-year-old former Wallaby is determined that the incident will not be the way he bows out of the public eye.

"I have had a couple of NRL clubs that have asked and been interested. I will not finish my career the way I did last year," he told a Sydney radio station.

Sailor first reached prominence in the 13-man game, making 189 appearances for current NRL champions the Brisbane Broncos, before crossing to union and the Queensland Reds in 2001.

A failed drugs test was not the only blemish on his disciplinary record with bans meted out to him for several drunken incidents whilst on tour.

But the former New South Wales Waratah has no complaints about the way the sport's authorities have treated him.

"I didn't have the best year last year obviously with South Africa and the drinking thing and I have got to cop that and I'm willing to cop that," he added.

"I have got to be accountable for my own actions."
