Five-try Wasps beat Falcons
25/11/2007
Wasps scored five tries in a comfortable 35-12 victory over Newcastle Falcons at Adams Park in the Guinness Premiership.
The London side inched ahead in a tightly contested first half thanks to two penalties from Danny Cipriani.
Just before half-time they breached the Falcons' defence as Riki Flutey scored their first try and Paul Sackey followed him three minutes later to give the home side a 18-0 lead at the break.
Newcastle hit back at the start of the second period through the unlikely sources of props Jon Golding and Dave Wilson.
However that was as close as the visitors would come as Wasps turned on the style to break the resistance of the Falcons.
Cipriani had already scored a try in between Newcastle's two scores and when he and Sackey grabbed their second tries each Wasps were out of touch for the Falcons.
Elsewhere in the Premiership, Saracens moved into third place with a 24-20 win over London Irish at Vicarage Road.
Delon Armitage gave the visitors a dream start when he crossed the whitewash after just seven minutes. But Saracens fly-half Gordon Ross managed to put his side ahead with some well taken penalties and a drop goal to make it 9-5.
Armitage then struck two penalties himself to give Irish a slender 11-9 lead at the break.
Saracens' Glenn Jackson dropped a goal at the start of the second period and then converted Adam Powell's try to put the home side well ahead, only for Irish to chip away at the lead.
Peter Hewat and Armitage added three penalties between them to give Irish a 20-19 lead but with two minutes left Richard Haughton scored a try for Saracens which won the match.
