Gatland wants selection change

10/01/2008

Wales are set to introduce new rules which will mean that players plying their trade outside the country may not be selected for the national team.

This type of structure is already in place in New Zealand and Australia, and new Wales boss Warren Gatland feels it is essential for the development of his team that they follow the example set by the southern-hemisphere teams.

"It will enable us to develop a new national squad training regime that is required to return the team to international competitiveness," said Gatland.

"We will be able to remain in close and constant contact with the individuals to ensure they are fully on board with the structures and systems in place to get the best out of them as Welsh internationals.

"That is vital because this is all about building Welsh international rugby for the long term and I am determined to focus on that."

Gatland names his first Wales squad for the Six Nations on Monday and the majority of players are expected to come from the Ospreys, Cardiff Blues, Llanelli Scarlets and Newport-Gwent Dragons.

The new rules will not affect players who currently play abroad, with the likes of Gareth Cooper and Will James at Gloucester, and Brent Cockbain at Sale still in contention to be selected.

But if the new proposals are agreed during a Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) board meeting on January 24th, then players who sign contracts away from the four Welsh regions will be affected.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18422471-ADNFCR
