Gloucester extend Premiership lead with Saracens win
12/04/2008
Gloucester have extended their lead at the top of the Guinness Premiership with a bonus point win over Saracens at Kingsholm, winning 39-15.
The Cherry and Whites are now six points clear of second-placed Bath, who have played a game less, as they close in on a guaranteed place in the Premiership final.
Having been beaten by Munster in the Heineken Cup last week Gloucester were back to their best as they dominated a Saracens side who appeared spent following their win over Ospreys six days ago.
James Simpson-Daniel scored Gloucester's first try following barracking runs by Akapusi Qera and Marco Bortolami. Sarries kept in touch thanks to the boot of Glen Jackson but Ryan Lamb ensured the home side went into the break ahead with a penalty.
Lamb then scored two tries at the start of the second half as Gloucester became rampant against a depleted Sarries side.
The young fly-half side-stepped three players on his way to his first try and had a simple run-in for his second when he intercepted Neil de Kock's pass.
It was Lamb's long pass which created the space for Gloucester's next try. Lesley Vainikolo eventually received the ball on the wing and ran over a defender to touch down.
Although Sarries got two tries back Qera and Rory Lawson also scored for the Cherry and Whites to help them to a comprehensive win.
Elsewhere in the Premiership Wasps moved into sixth place with a crushing 49-12 win over Worcester Warriors.
Wasps ran in seven tries, including a brace for former England full-back Mark van Gisbergen and one each for Danny Cipriani and Tom Voyce.
