Henson faces disorder charge

10/12/2007

Ospreys and Wales rugby star Gavin Henson has been charged with causing a disturbance on a train from London to Cardiff last Sunday.

Henson, 25, from St Bridges Major, is to be prosecuted for public order offences alongside three other men – Jamie Mark Griffiths, 26, from Bridgend; David Norman, 33, from Bridgend; and Matthew Rhys Williams, 25, from Wick.

The four were travelling back to Wales from London following Ospreys' 19-8 victory over Harlequins in the EDF Energy Anglo-Welsh Cup on December 2nd - a game in which Henson scored all of his side's points.

Following reports of a "disturbance" on the train, officers from British Transport police (BTP) met the group as they disembarked at Cardiff Central station at 21:25 GMT.

At the time no arrests were made but BTP have since confirmed that the four will be summoned to Cardiff magistrates court for offences contrary to section five of the Public Order Act 1986.

"There is no court date at this time, but is likely to be in January," BTP said in a statement today.

Following the news that Henson had been spoken to about the incident, Ospreys issued an apology on behalf of the player and said it would be "something we are looking into and it will be dealt with internally".

"After playing a crucial part in what proved to be a particularly satisfying victory for the Ospreys on Sunday afternoon, Gavin made the return journey from London via train with friends who had attended the match in support of the Ospreys," a statement from the club read.

"Spirits were high amongst the group given the nature of the victory, and the group apologises for any inconvenience caused to fellow passengers."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18387625-ADNFCR
