Hill returns to England fold

07/02/2007

Saracens flanker Richard Hill has made a welcome return to the England squad.

The 33-year-old surprised his team-mates and onlookers when he reported for duty at Bath University and, while not expected to be ready for action in the immediate games, is being primed for a Six Nations recall.

Coach Brian Ashton, still glowing from a much-improved performance from his side at Twickenham last weekend as they beat Scotland in the tournament's first round of games, said he was delighted to have the back row player back in the team.

While stressing Hill was not yet ready for a return to the international arena, Ashton refused to rule him out for the duration of the Six Nations and said Hill would be keeping him updated on his fitness.

"Players like that who have been out with long-term injuries are pretty shrewd, they know themselves when they're ready for international rugby," the England coach said.

"It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that he could be involved."

Hill has been blighted by injury, suffering two cruciate ligament tears, which at one stage looked like they would result in the end of a glittering career.

Like fellow long-term injury victim Jonny Wilkinson, who sensationally announced his return to the England side with a 27-point display against Scotland, Hill was a member of the team that won the World Cup in 2003.
