Hooker Bennett withdraws from Wales tour
20/05/2008
Hooker Huw Bennett has withdrawn from Wales' summer tour of South Africa because of an ankle injury.
The Ospreys front-row was forced to leave the field during Shane Williams' testimonial match at the Millennium Stadium last Saturday.
He was immediately sent for scans on the joint, which was causing him severe discomfort.
And while it remains unclear how long Bennett will be out for, he has suffered ligament damage that will certainly make him unavailable to Wales head coach Warren Gatland for the tricky two-Test tour next month.
"After consultation we can confirm Huw will not be fit enough to join the South Africa tour party," said Wales team physiotherapist Mark Davies.
"We know he won't travel due to the ligament damage he has sustained to his left ankle, but are awaiting further test results to determine precisely how long he will be in recovery."
Bennett's Ospreys team-mate Richard Hibbard has been called up as temporary cover and has joined the Wales training camp, although it is not yet known if he will be confirmed as a full member of the party to tour against the Springboks.
