Irish secure Madejski future
11/01/2008
Guinness Premiership side London Irish have agreed a deal with Reading FC to continue playing their home games at the Madejski Stadium until 2026.
The new arrangement, which comes into effect immediately, secures the future of the Exiles, who have been residents at the Premier League club's ground since 2000.
The Madejski Stadium, built in 1998 and named after the Royals' chairman John Madejski, has a total capacity of more than 24,000 although planning permission has been granted to have the venue increased to a 38,000 all-seater.
Thanks to the stadium's capacity, London Irish hold the record attendance for a Premiership rugby match - 22,648 - when the home side beat Wasps 16-13 on March 18th last year.
And John Conlan, the chairman of London Irish, described the Madejski Stadium as "the finest club rugby stadium in Europe".
"We're delighted with the progress we've made since moving there in 2000 and at the way the partnership has worked and developed between ourselves and Reading FC," Conlan said.
"This new contract consolidates that relationship and enables both clubs to plan ahead to their mutual benefit."
Madejski himself added: "We are delighted to sign this new long-term agreement with London Irish.
"We've developed an extremely healthy, mutually-beneficial relationship and look forward to continue hosting London Irish fixtures at Madejski Stadium.
"We benefit greatly from our association with one of the most professional and progressive rugby clubs in Europe and are very pleased to be able to make this announcement."
