Late Nonu try sinks valiant Irish side
07/06/2008
Ma'a Nonu scored the winning try for New Zealand after they came from behind to beat Ireland 21-11 in Wellington.
Ireland had been ahead midway through the first half and were in contention heading into the final quarter of the match but Nonu's try and a Dan Carter penalty put the game beyond their reach.
Rain made condition difficult throughout the match, meaning points were at a premium.
Ronan O'Gara gave Ireland the lead in the ninth minute when he slotted home a penalty but the All Blacks responded quickly with a try from Sitiveni Sivivatu.
The winger scored his 22nd try in as many Tests following a flowing move that began in Kiwi territory. Centre Conrad Smith jinked his way past Brian O'Driscoll before releasing Sivivatu who used his pace to finish the move.
However, Ireland moved ahead again thanks to a try from Paddy Wallace. The forward emerged from a maul close to the New Zealand try line to bundle his way over for the score.
Carter missed a penalty but did manage to connect with one in the 32nd minute to put the two teams level at 8-8 going in to half time.
After the break O'Gara and Carter exchanged penalties in quick succession before a spell of concerted All Blacks pressure earned them the vital breakthrough.
Carter broke through the first line of Irish defenders and released Nonu who used his power to ward of the attention of other potential tacklers to slide in at the corner.
Carter added the conversion and another penalty to stretch the lead to ten points but Ireland could not find a response, meaning their winless streak against the All blacks continued.
