Leinster clinch Magners League title with win over Dragons

04/05/2008

Leinster secured the Magners League title in style with a resounding 41-8 victory over the Newport-Gwent Dragons.

Two first-half tries from Ollie le Roux and another from Shane Horgan all but sealed the win for Leinster as they went into the break 20-3 ahead.

Shane Jennings, Chris Whitaker and Cameron Jowitt added further tries for Leinster in the second-half with the Dragons only replying through a solitary try from Adam Black.

South African le Roux was playing his last match for Leinster before he goes back to his homeland and he made a fantastic start to the match by scoring inside the first five minutes. The prop forward thundered his way through to the try-line after taking a quick tap penalty.

The giant le Roux managed to repeat his try-scoring act only five minutes later and it was almost a replica of his first. He once again burst through weak Dragons defending to cross the try-line.

The Dragons managed to get on the score-sheet through a Ceri Sweeney penalty, but it was their defending that let them down.

Leinster were almost out of sight on the half-hour-mark when a trademark off-load from Brian O'Driscoll allowed Horgan to sprint to the try-line and score. Felipe Contepomi converted the try and added a penalty.

The second-half was one way traffic as Leinster carved open the Dragons very easily. First Contepomi found Jennings with an inside ball and he went on to score a try.

Jamie Heaslip then went on an amazing 60 metre run for Leinster and at the end of it he setup Whitaker to score a simple try. Jowitt took advantage of the Dragons sloppily giving the ball away in their own 22 to barge over for another try.

Leinster seemed to take their foot off the gas from there and Black grabbed a consolation try for the Dragons.

Elsewhere in the Magners League, Munster claimed a thrilling 24-23 win over Llanelli Scarlets and Glasgow beat Ulster 35-24.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18579848-ADNFCR
