Llanelli run riot against Leeds

03/11/2007

Llanelli Scarlets ran in eight tries against Leeds Carnegie during a 59-19 victory in the EDF Energy Cup to move to the top of group D.

It was a quick start by the men in red as they touched down three times in the opening 16 minutes. Dan Evans, James Bater and Mark Jones all romped in under the posts, giving Stephen Jones easy conversions.

Tom Biggs replied with a try for Leeds just after the half-hour mark, but the Scarlets made sure of a bonus point when Alex Popham scored before the break.

Despite a 31-7 lead at half time the Welsh side chose to continue attacking in the second half.

Although Biggs grabbed another try at the start of the second period the Scarlets soon reasserted their dominance, scoring four more tries.

Prop Iestyn Thomas scored in the corner, Scott MacLeod added another and Simon Easterby's try took them past the 50 point mark.

Evans scored his second of the match three minutes later while Jones continued to be accurate, kicking 100 per cent of his attempts at goal.

Jonny Hepworth's try for Leeds before the final whistle was merely a consolation effort.

Elsewhere in the competition, Sale won an attritional game against Bath 25-10, thanks largely to the boot of Charlie Hodgson.

The fly-half kicked five penalties, a drop goal and a conversion, while Chris Bell scored the Sharks' only try of the match.

Although Lorne Ward crossed the whitewash for Bath, Hodgson was always able to keep Sale ahead.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18341917-ADNFCR
