Marconnet to miss World Cup

21/08/2007

France prop Sylvain Marconnet has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup after being told he will need an operation to correct an ankle injury.

The 31-year-old forward is set to miss the first major rugby tournament on home soil because of problems he has encountered as a result of breaking his leg in March when skiing.

In the accident Marconnet broke his tibia, which during his recovery put added pressure on the ankle joint and caused a stress fracture that now needs surgery.

The Stade Francais player, who was expected to start for France, said he is "very disappointed" to miss out.

"I have to follow medical advice and have an operation quickly so I can be back again with my club," he said.

"I would like to thank the sporting and medical staff of Les Bleus for having supported me in my bid to be fit for the competition."

Forward Nicolas Mas will be Marconnet's replacement in the squad but coach Bernard Laporte admitted he would miss the 71-cap veteran.

"I am deeply disappointed for him," he said.

"It's always unfortunate that a player is forced to withdraw from such a competition but it's one of the risks athletes have to live with."
