McCaw contract "includes sabbatical option"
09/06/2008
New Zealand captain Richie McCaw could seek a brief stint in European club rugby within the next three seasons after he agreed a new central contract.
The flanker, widely regarded as the best all-round forward in world rugby union, has signed a new deal with New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) to take him through until the next Rugby World Cup, which will be held on the All Blacks' home soil.
As part of the deal McCaw has the option of playing outside New Zealand, which would normally make him ineligible for the national team under the country's selection laws.
It would enable him to join countryman Dan Carter in Europe, as the fly-half - who has a similar sabbatical agreement - looks set to move to a French club in the Top 14 later this year.
However, McCaw has said he is unlikely to take up his sabbatical option as soon as that if indeed he exercises that right at all.
"The black jersey is the most important thing to me," he said.
"Playing for the All Blacks is the ultimate and I'm really enjoying the Crusaders. There's more money available overseas, but personally it wouldn't bring the same challenge."
McCaw continued: "Right now, I'm feeling fresh mentally and my body seems to be handling the rugby OK so I have no plans for a sabbatical.
"I see myself playing here in New Zealand through to the next World Cup, but I appreciate that the sabbatical option is there to discuss with the NZRU in case things change over the next couple of seasons."
NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said signing up McCaw on a new long-term deal "is hugely significant for everyone involved in rugby in New Zealand".
"It shows how much the jersey means and that we can keep world-class players in New Zealand," Tew explained.
"Richie is recognised as the best open-side flanker in the world and his extension is a positive sign that we can create the right environment in New Zealand rugby for players of his calibre."
