Munster leave Llanelli reeling
09/12/2007
Munster left Llanelli Scarlets stunned after completing a 29-16 win over the Welsh side at Stradey Park yesterday.
The former Heineken Cup champions moved to the top of pool five following the win, leaving Llanelli stranded at the bottom of the table with no points.
An impressive first-half kicking display from Munster fly-half Ronan O'Gara helped the Irish side establish a lead.
He kicked two early penalties before Regan King put the Scarlets ahead when he scored their only try.
Muster hit back immediately as O'Gara kicked two penalties and David Wallace claimed their first try. Another O'Gara penalty gave Munster a 22-10 lead at the break.
The second half was a more attritional affair and although the Scarlets tried to ease their way back into the contest through the boot of Rees Priestlend a try by Marcus Horan gave Munster the spoils.
In the same group Wasps lost to French side Clermont Auvergne 37-27. The title holders let a losing bonus point slip in the final moments as Aurelien Rougerie scored in the corner to give Clermont a ten-point winning margin.
Tries from Julien Malzieu and Mario Ledesma gave Clermont a 20-10 lead at the break but Wasps responded through Tim Payne and James Haskell to take the lead.
But six penalty kicks from Brock James and Rougerie's try at the death meant the English side took nothing from the game.
Elsewhere, Saracens moved to the top of pool four with a comfortable 72-7 win over Viadana, while in pool three Bristol helped their chances of reaching the knockout stage with a 17-3 win away at Harlequins.
