Mustoe try downs Scarlets
01/01/2008
A last-minute try from winger Richard Mustoe earned Newport Gwent Dragons a dramatic 15-13 Magners League win over Llanelli Scarlets at Rodney Parade.
The visitors seemed on course to record a win that would have taken them to the top of the table after they took a slender 13-10 lead into injury-time.
However Mustoe slid in to secure a late victory for the Dragons after full-back Kevin Morgan evaded the attentions of a tiring defence and found his team-mate with a loopig pass.
The finale was at odds with a turgid start to the contest which saw the Scarlets edge ahead through a penalty from Rhys Priestland.
A penalty try increased the gap to ten points after an under-pressure Dragons front row were penalised for standing up from a scrum close to their line.
Ceri Sweeney landed the hosts' first points from the tee just before half-time to eat into the deficit.
Newport Gwent were at a one-man advantage after James Bater had been consigned to the sin bin for killing the ball and they made it pay as they stole in for the converted try that drew them level.
Sweeney glided past Priestland before shipping the ball on to centre Ashley Smith who cantered in for a crucial score.
Priestland seemed to have taken revenge by restoring the Scarlets' lead soon after with a successful penalty, but a courageous final surge from the home side eventually unlocked the opposition backline for a memorable win.
