O'Driscoll tops Six Nations poll

12/04/2007

Ireland centre Brian O'Driscoll has been voted the player of the championships by Six Nations fans after captaining his country to a second successive Triple Crown.

The former Lions skipper trounced his rivals in the online contest by amassing more than twice as many votes as his nearest contender.

Visitors to the competition's official website were invited to pick a team from all the players involved in the championships with each selection counting as a vote for the individual honour.

O'Driscoll scored just one try in this year's competition, but his strong influence on Eddie O'Sullivan's side was seen clearest in his absence when a hamstring injury meant he watched from the sidelines as France stole a last-minute victory at Croke Park.

The Leinster back played in the rest of his team's matches to take his total number of caps for his country to 71.

"I am very surprised, but honoured, to learn that I had been voted as player of the tournament," said O'Driscoll.

"There were some outstanding players and performances in this year's Six Nations Championship.

"I'm obviously delighted to have won this accolade and would like to thank those fans who voted for me."
