Powerful Scots run over Pumas in Buenos Aires

15/06/2008

Scotland produced a dominant performance full of power and guile to overpower Argentina 26-14 in the second Test between the sides in Buenos Aires.

Tries from hooker Ross Ford and centre Graeme Morrison, as well as 16 points from the ever-reliable boot of Chris Paterson, steered the tourists towards a deserved victory.

Ford went over in the first half following good work from Ben Cairns and Paterson near the touchline as the Scots controlled proceedings.

Paterson's conversion plus three penalties gave the visitors a 16-point lead at half-time as some fierce defensive work kept the normally dangerous Argentinean attack scoreless.

Another Paterson kick early in the second period showed up his importance to the Scotland side, especially after Federico Todeschini had squandered chances with the boot either side of the break.

However, the risk of a whitewash was soon wiped out after Juan Fernandez Lobbe crossed the line for the World Cup semi-finalist hosts after a period of sustained pressure eventually told on the hard-working Scotland defence.

Any chance of a resurgence from Argentina was put to bed soon after, though, as replacement fly-half Dan Parks made an excellent break before offloading to Morrison, who re-established a clear advantage for Scotland with another score.

Despite conceding a late try to Horacio Agulla, which took the shine off the scoreline somewhat, the Scots will be more than happy with a performance that yielded their first victory over Argentina since 1990.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18639051-ADNFCR
