Quins sign Springboks star

22/06/2007

Guinness Premiership side Harlequins have signed South African centre De Wet Barry on a two-year contract from the beginning of next season.

The 28-year-old Springboks star, who has won 39 caps in a glittering international career to date, will be tied to the London club until at least June 2009 after joining from Super 14 side the Stormers.

Quins describe Barry as a "hard-running centre" who would bring "a wealth of experience" to the Twickenham side's backs division.

The club's director of rugby, Dean Richards, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have secured the services of such a quality player.

"He's a formidable defender and a fantastic runner so I expect him to fit into the Guinness Premiership with ease.

"This latest signing further highlights the fact that we are building a squad that has good competition for places and strength-in-depth and I'm sure he'll prove his worth."

Barry said he is "looking forward to the challenge of joining Harlequins", describing the move as a "new chapter in my rugby career".

"My wife, Marcelle, and I are looking forward to experiencing life in a different country. I am sure I will be very happy at Harlequins and intend on making the most of this opportunity," he added.
