Reagan faces Bristol rap

04/12/2007

Barbarians captain Mark Reagan has been punished by Bristol after he defied his club to play for the invitational side against South Africa.

Reagan led his side to a memorable 22-5 win over the world champions, but his appearance came against his club's wishes and the collective stance of all Guinness Premiership sides not to release players for the Twickenham match.

It is not clear what shape Reagan's disciplining took, but head coach Richard Hill previously indicated that the former Lions and England star could expect a hefty fine.

"We have had a meeting with Mark and he has been sanctioned," said Bristol chief executive David White.

"We now consider the matter closed and will not be making any further comment."

Although Bristol were determined to prevent Reagan playing for the Barbarians, it is unlikely he would have played in their 13-13 draw against Leeds in the EDF Energy Cup the same weekend.

The match was a dead rubber and Bristol rested a host of first-choice stars in a bid to keep them fresh for Heienken Cup action this weekend.

Reagan was substituted by Barbarians coach Eddie O'Sullivan halfway through the second half and insisted that he had made the right choice by playing.

"It's always worth playing for the Barbarians. They're a great side," he said.

"I'll report for training at Bristol on Monday and no doubt we'll discuss what happens then.

"I'm fully fit and one of my objectives was to stay fit - and beat the world champions."

Reagan was originally to be partnered in the Baa-Baas' front row by Sale star Andrew Sheridan, but he fell back into line with his club despite claims that a recent contract renegotiation had included a clause to allow him to turn out on such occasions.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18381466-ADNFCR
