Rising star Cipriani set for spell on the sidelines

18/05/2008

Danny Cipriani is set to miss England's tour of New Zealand next month after suffering a horrific injury in Wasps' 21-10 win over Bath.

Cipriani, who kicked two penalties, was tackled by Ollie Barkley and found himself at the bottom of a ruck in the 49th minute of the Guinness Premiership semi-final.

The Wasps fly-half cried out in pain and was given oxygen treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off and taken by to hospital by ambulance.

Ian McGeechan, Wasps' director of rugby, said they are waiting to find out the extent of Cipriani's injury.

"We'll have to see if it's a break, dislocation or both. We think it's the ankle," McGeechan said.

"The only priority for Danny now is to be 100 per cent fit again. He's a talented player and his fitness should be all we're thinking about.

"We'll make sure that happens. When he comes back and plays he'll be 100 per cent. This club does that for its players."

Cipriani was set to have the number ten jersey for the All Blacks tour after ousting Jonny Wilkinson during the Six Nations.

Wasps star Lawrence Dallaglio, who will retire after the final on May 31st, said: "It's a nasty injury and no one likes to see it. Danny's got a bright future and we wish him all the best."

Wasps reached the final thanks to tries from Fraser Waters, Riki Flutey, and Tom Palmer. ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18598529-ADNFCR
