Robinson set for knee surgery

08/06/2007

Jason Robinson is set to undergo surgery on his injured right knee in order to be fully fit in time for England's World Cup defence later this year.

The Sale Sharks winger, who announced his intention to retire from the game following the showpiece tournament in France in the autumn, suffered the injury while captaining England on the recent tour of South Africa.

Robinson skippered the side during the first match of the two-Test tour in Bloemfontein, which the tourists lost 58-10, but was sent home before the second match in against the Springboks in Pretoria to see a specialist.

And now the Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced that Robinson will need minor surgery but is expected to recover in time to take part in the World Cup warm-up matches in August.

"Jason Robinson will have an arthroscopy on his right knee next Tuesday (June 12th) to clear out minor debris resulting from the injury sustained in the first test against South Africa in Bloemfontein on May 26th," an RFU statement read.

"It is anticipated that he will be available for selection for the Investec Challenge games against Wales (August 4th, Twickenham) and France (August 11th, Twickenham). England also play France in Marseille on August 18th."

England go into the World Cup on the back of inconsistent form and a disappointing southern hemisphere tour that did not feature as many as 35 regular first-team players due to club commitments.
