Sale cruise past Petrarca

18/11/2007

Mark Cueto scored two tries as Sale Sharks comfortably defeated Italian side Petrarca 53-14 at the Stadio Plebiscito yesterday.

The Sharks predictably dominated proceedings despite resting some of their key players. Cueto scored a try in each half in his first game back for the side since the World Cup.

Scotland winger Rory Lamont also claimed two tries as the Sharks cruised to the top of their pool following their second win in the competition.

Forwards Chris Day, Lionel Faure, Dean Schofield and David Tait also scored for the English side, while fly-half Lee Thomas kicked 16 points in place of Charlie Hodgson who was rested for the match.

Elsewhere, Bath also overcame Italian opponents – beating Parma 28-0 – but were far from convincing during the match at the Recreation Ground.

It was not until first-half stoppage time that Bath took the lead, thanks to lock Steve Borthwick.

Bath's play improved after the break, sparked by the performance of South African World Cup winner Butch James – who was making his debut for the club.

Centre Alex Crockett grabbed a second try for the home side 20 minutes into the second period and when James fed in Olly Barklay for Bath's third try that gave them sufficient breathing space to play a more expansive game for the rest of the half.

Jonathon Faamatuainu then got Bath's fourth try five minutes from time to hand them a bonus point.

In pool two Worcester Warriors thrashed Montauban 41-18 at Sixways. The home side scored five tries and now top their pool.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18359712-ADNFCR
