Scarlets down Ospreys in derby

28/12/2007

Llanelli Scarlets narrowly beat Ospreys 17-12 in their Magners League Wales derby to keep up the pressure on early pace-setters Leinster.

Tries from Gavin Thomas and Nathan Brew ensured the home side took the points and left Ospreys - the reigning champions - struggling with just two wins in their last eight games.

James Hook had given the visitors the lead at half-time thanks to three well-taken penalties in response to Thomas' bundled converted try.

But Scarlets fly-half Stephen Jones knocked over a penalty of his own and successfully converted Brew's score early in the second half to stretch out a lead.

And despite some late pressure from Ospreys and a fourth Hook penalty that reduced the deficit, Scarlets held on for a vital win.

In the other match in the Magners league last night Munster proved themselves masterful of the inclement weather conditions as they beat Connacht 17-0 at a gusty Musgrave Park.

Paul Warwick scored four penalties with the wind in the first half to give his side a 12-0 lead before controlling possession throughout the second half and extending their advantage through Denis Leamy's try 12 minutes from the end.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18407550-ADNFCR
