Second scan for Henson
28/02/2007
Wales and Ospreys centre Gavin Henson will delay a decision on whether or not to have surgery on his troublesome knee until he has had a second scan.
The 25-year-old has been hindered by the injury for over a month and as a result he has not been selected for any Wales squads in this year's Six Nations competition.
After missing out in the first three matches for his country – all of which have ended in defeat – Henson is hoping to impress against Edinburgh on Friday in a bid to win a place in the squad to face Italy on March 10th.
However, if Henson needs to go under the knife it would rule him out for at least three weeks, and consequently the rest of the Six Nations, which in turn could dent his hopes of securing a first XV place in time for the rugby World Cup in the autumn.
"Gavin will undergo a second scan so that the consultant can take another look," said Kevin Hopkins, Ospreys director of rugby.
"The sooner Gavin is back playing the better for everybody, but we need to make sure that the knee is right and if not we have to get it sorted out."
Ospreys physio Brian Downey said he suspects Henson has "a small tear in a cartilage" but that a final decision on whether an operation is necessary would be left to the surgeon.
