Sharks lose again

23/02/2007

Reigning champions Sale suffered a 9-14 defeat to London Irish in the Guinness Premiership at Edgeley Park.

The Sharks, who trailed 6-8 at the break, were led by three penalties from Lee Thomas.

But the Irish clinched victory with a try from Sailosi Tagicakibau while the in-form Shane Geraghty kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Despite the return of Mark Cueto and Andrew Sheridan, the Sharks suffer their eighth loss from 15 matches.

The result sees Cueto's side remain in eighth place, 18 points behind leaders Leicester while Irish's second straight win sees them climb to sixth place in the table.

Elsewhere, Newcastle boosted their survival hopes after hammering Wasps 37-11 at Kingston Park.

The Falcons, who led 16-6 at the break, rammed in five tries through Matt Burke, Jamie Noon, Mark Thompson, Mark Mayerhofler and Joe McDonnell.

Loki Crichton kicked three conversions and two penalties for the hosts to maintain their lead.

High-flying Wasps scored a try through Mark McMillan while Dave Walder kicked two penalties.

The result sees Newcastle climb above Northampton into tenth place but they are still just two points off the bottom.

Meanwhile, Wasps remain in third place but are seven points behind second-placed Bristol who have two games in hand.
